Ascent Trip ReportOn our way to Nashville we had to stop to get one county highpoint, and what better one than a state prominence point? We took a right off of IL34 in Herod then took a right on Williams Tower Road. There was a sign near the top that claimed that this was the second highest point in Illinois... not even close! We parked at that intersection and walked the road to the area by the towers. We found a couple high ground spots to visit, but no views. On the way back down Williams Tower Road we got our best views over and through the fall colors of the trees and onward to other hills in the distance. Following this side trip we made it to Cave-In-Rock to take the ferry to Kentucky. For the best views, I would think late fall or winter would be the best time to visit. |
