Ascent Trip ReportWent up Mount Etna again today, this time from Piano Provenzana. Way less people and a better hike all around. I was stopped by ice at over 10,000 ft. Didn't have campons or axe with me. Nice side stop at Pizzo Dineri on the way.
The thing is, Etna is an active volcano, eruptions have killed many people. As I got near the top there was gas/steam coming out of holes in the ground and I could see ahead massive brown puffs of smoke coming right out the ground, and a huge amount of smoke belching out of the crater. I don't think it was advisable to go to the high point anyway, just as the signs said. I would have liked to look down into the erupting crater but there was no safe way to do it. |
