Ascent Trip ReportTo get to Pfiefer bivy, park at the bridge below where the Deception river joins the Otira. Make your way to Paratu Stream where it is easy to hike up to Waharoa Saddle, from there some kind souls have cut a route through the brush heading South up the ridge, once you reach tussock there is a faint trail leading towards the high saddle that gives access to the basin west of where Pfiefer Bivy is located. Descend here and traverse over to Pfeifer Bivy, not really a trail here, so make sure to get your bearings for if you get misted out. Pfiefer Bivy is nice and clean and new and can fit 3 people.
We easily scrambled the West Ridge after spending a beautiful night in the newly renovated Pfiefer Bivy. We then traversed to Mount Tarapuhi (recommended) and then down the hard scree hell of the Tutu creek drainage to Deception River(not recommended). Just go back to Waharoa saddle.
