Ascent Trip Report

Today I took a lengthy tour over the “back roads” in the Mendocino National Forest, bagging three peaks but doing a lot more driving than hiking. From home in Berkeley, I connected with I-5, picked up Pete Yamagata in Willows, then headed west on Rte 162 to Elk Creek and 0.5 mile north on County Rte 306 to Alder Springs Rd (Rte 162/FH7), then followed FH7 west past Alder Springs and Plaskett Lake Recreation Area to the well marked turnoff for Black Butte, signed “Black Butte Summit Trail Scenic View.” (This turnoff is approx 32 miles from the start of the Alder Springs Rd.) No problem driving south on the access road about 0.9 mile to the TH parking area (6,913'). From here it is a pleasant trail hike of about a mile to the small rocky summit. Great panoramic views with perfect weather today. Black Butte is the Glenn CoHP and also the site of a former fire lookout. (Check reports for Anthony Peak and South Yolla Bolla Mountain for today’s continuing activity.)
