Ascent Trip Report

We were expecting a mostly sunny day up at Iron Peak, and wound up hiking in a (brief) snowstorm! Also, it turns out that hunting season is going on right now...

The trip to the Beverly Turnpike trailhead was mostly smooth and uneventful: the road has got some really rough spots, but it's not too bad as long as you're paying attention and not going too fast. We could tell it was open season for hunters well before we arrived at the parking area due to the large number of pickup trucks parked along the forest roads, and sure enough there were a bunch more at the Beverly trailhead. We put on the brightest clothing we had available and made a lot of noise as we hiked; luckily none of us were mistaken for a deer and shot!

We started hiking at about 10:15am, it took us about 2.5 hours to reach the summit with a few breaks. Trail is in good shape; only a couple of blowdowns and muddy spots to step over/around. The sky was overcast and the air was chilly, and about halfway up the trail it began to snow. The snow did stick to the ground, but didn't accumulate to more than a trace covering. On the way back down from the summit the sun came out and temperature warmed enough to melt it all. Oh well; it was fun while it lasted. The trip back to the car took about 2 hours.

For the most part is was a very quiet day on the trail: we only encountered two other small parties of hikers, plus a few hunters hanging out uncomfortably close to the trail. It was cold and windy on the summit and ridge, but we did have some pretty nice views as the clouds swirled around Mount Stewart and lifted above Mount Rainier and Mount Adams in the distance.
