Ascent Trip Report

Hike was rated at 2 plus due to the short scrambling involved over some steep cliff bands on the hike & climb up Thomas Cole prior to the Camel's Hump.

This was the best hike I've had in the Catskills for the upper portion from the Caudal up to Thomas Cole. The open air "ridge" (actually a wide meadow in places) made this almost unique. You don't get this in the Catskills very often, and it's a real pleasure when you do.

The Blackhead Range trail was straightforward with no problems. As recorded, the 2.9 miles of the hike took me to the summit of Thomas Cole (viewpoint nearby).

This hike was done solo in late Fall of 1997, and was planned to cover the two major peaks: Thomas Cole & Black Dome. See the latter on this same date.
