Ascent Trip Report

There are 2 candidate high point areas for Calhoun County, I went to both using Michael Schwartz TR as edited by Charlie Zerphey's TR. Michael's pioneered route of 14 years ago still apply today and there is nothing to add.

Michael's route visits Calhoun and Roane Counties all in one trip, this TR talks about my findings/experience for Calhoun County only.

MULE KNOB ...1.7 miles, 1 hour RT.
Michael's driving directions "..... left onto a dirt road just past a small bridge over a creek, ....." is now signed Granny She Road CR#11-3.
I hiked-up directly to the nice eastern neighbor, then the ridge west to MULE KNOB, where I found only one BM besides a Witness Post Survey Marker, "USGS MULE KNOB, 1961" with an arrow, couldn't find the other one (???). I backtracked over the obvious eastern neighbor, this nice peak belongs in the PB Library so I added it as MULE KNOB-EAST (prov). A pipe line right-of-way, recently maintained, goes right over the HP (38.69991,-81.06010).
We moved on to the second candidate high point area.

SECOND AREA 1 1/2 MILES WEST OF MUDFORK .... 1 mile, 45 minutes one way.
We had a nice long chat with Glen and Connie Hanlin, they welcome county high pointers. We parked to one side of the entrance with "twin white stone pillars" (38.64165,-81.09048), just before this entrance on the left is a small building signed "Lucky Hollow Lodge".
Glen's sister and brother-in-law, Cornell, were paying a visit and staying at this lodge. We chatted, Cornell talked about the mountain, saying that the jeep road (my route) goes directly to the barn on the ridge (Michael's descending route). Told me that the road north of the barn will descend/come out on Camp Run Road 100 yards west of the small lodge. I took note of his information.
I followed/climbed the jeep road finding it to be exactly as shown on topo. Where the jeep road crosses under the Power Line (38.63824,-81.10137, abt .8 miles from TH and 1400' elevation)) I bushwacked steeply west up the Power Line right-of-way (tall, rough thorny grass, no fun) less than 100 yards to the ridge, then north up the ridge less than 200 yards to the obvious HP (38.63977,-81.10092).
From here I continued southbound with Michael's route to the 3 candidate high point areas for Roane County, see its TR.

"IF O'ER SEA O'ER LAND I ROAM, STILL I'LL THINK OF HAPPY HOME." ... the register herald, berkley, wv.
