Ascent Trip Report

Point Lenana was the culmination of our popular hiking circuit around Mt. Kenya. Sept 10: Depart with Mountain Travel group from the historic Norfolk Inn in Nairobi to drive north to camp (8,650') near the Sirimon Gate on the edge of the forest on the western slopes of Mt. Kenya. Sept 11: Drive to head of dirt track, then hike 5 miles to campsite in the Liki North Valley about half a mile beyond the Liki North Hut (13,100'). Sept 12: Traverse out of the Liki North Valley to a high ridge, descend into Mackinder’s Valley, hike up to overnight at Mackinder Valley Camp (14,500'). Sept. 13: With a pre-dawn start, follow well defined trail, then over rock slabs and faint use trail to snow-free summit of Point Lenana. Imposing views of Mt. Kenya awaited. After a rewarding summit stay, descend snow slopes of Lewis Glacier in mist to visit the Austrian Hut and its smaller neighbor, the Top Hut, before descent to the Teleki Valley and early afternoon camp near the Ranger Station (13,500'). Sept 14: Mostly downhill, first through high moorland with abundant groundels and lobelias, then the famous but rather tiresome “Vertical Bog” before re-entering the forest and meeting our vehicles at the Meteorlogical Station roadhead (10,000'), about 5 miles above the Naro Maru park gate. Soon we were enjoying the overnight comforts of the Aberdare Country Club near Mweiga.
