Ascent Trip ReportA fantastic hike! Some of the best views of the Cascades in all the state, especially the alpenglow we experienced hiking just before sunset - Jefferson was a blazing red pyramid.
FS roads are all passenger vehicle passable. Arrived nearing dusk. Hurried up since we wanted to try to capture the alpenglow from the summit before it was gone (great vistas of everything South of Jefferson the whole second half, and cool silhouette shots of Coffin Mountain). Clearly marked trail junction half way up, just after the flat saddle (good camping area). Summited just before sunset so unfortunately did not get an unobstructed view of Jefferson alpenglow. Hiked back down in the dark.
The TH is difficult to find:
--Turn West onto Straight Creek Road 2.7mi South of the Marian Fish Hatchery entrance (no indication of Bachelor Mountain).
--4.1mi on NR11/Straight Creek Road.
--Slight Right onto 1168 gravel road. 4.5mi
--Left at T-junction onto 430. 0.4mi to TH.
0/1 ACCESS - would be impossible to find without directions
2/2 REMOTENESS (Popularity, Sight/Sound) - some FS roads visible but the vistas are sweeping
1/1 CONDITION - a few downed trees and some encroaching shrubs but obvious and well-maintained
3/3 VARIETY (Flora and Fauna, Geological, Terrain) - great value for such a short hike!
3/3 VIEWS - some of the best in Oregon
