Ascent Trip Report

As related in my TR for Pleasant Point, I was completely oblivious to the location of Cerro Gordo Peak. Without any advance knowledge of the area, I thought, when I first saw it in today's early morning light, that it wasn't high enough or impressive enough to be one of the 7 peaks on the DPS list. Hence, I headed for higher ground to the north, which culminated in higher Pleasant Point, a few miles to the north. It was only after seeing smoke curling from one of the buildings in the Cerro Gordo ghost town that I met the occupant and caretaker of the privately owned Cerro Gordo property, Mr. D.E. Staats. He quickly set me straight on Cerro Gordo Peak. I wasted no more time and headed for the peak. David did not share my motivation and stayed behind to drink coffee and chat with Mr. Staats about the history of the area. The distance to the peak was short and easy. It was an interesting area in the midst of the remains of a once thriving silver mining community with a population that peaked at 5,000 inhabitants. In 35 minutes I reached the summit, topped by a surveyor's wooden cairn and two benchmarks, but no register in sight. Soon I wasback down to rejoin David and Mr. Staats. After more coffee and talk with him about the colorful history of Cerro Gordo, David and I headed on down the steep road to Keeler (noon) before going to Wildrose Canyon to join a DPS climb of Telescope Peak tomorrow. Cerro Gordo Peak was my 6th DPS peak, and I hoped that Telescope would be my 7th and final one on this small peak list.
