Ascent Trip ReportAfter yesterday's hike up Coso Peak, David and I drove to Olancha to pick up our good friend Ian Mackinlay, who had hitch-hiked up from Los Angeles. We returned to Darwin, where we played the juke box and drank Cokes at the local saloon before sacking out along the road outside town. This morning we joined the other Sierra Clubbers at 8:00A and dashed off on a dirt road toward Junction Ranch, near where, at about 6,000', we started at 9:00A for Maturango, which rises steeply from the desert. The hike was straight forward, going first up a canyon, then onto a prominent ridge that leads to the summit. Several us reached the top about 11:30A, well in advance of the main group led by Parker Severson. We all had a relaxing 1 1/2 hours enjoying our perch with fine views of White Mountain Peak, Telescope Peak, the desert, and, of course, the great snow-covered Sierra crest. By 3:00P David, Ian, and I were on our way home, stopping first to look around Inyo-Kern, and the old mining towns of Johannesburg, and Randsburg. |
