Ascent Trip Report

Carlo and I got a late start (9:30A) from the TH (5,800') at road’s end near the
camping area at Crystal Lake, approached from SR 39. We headed for Windy Gap and from there east about 1.5 miles to the 8,400' saddle between Middle Hawkins and Mt. Hawkins. Continued east to Mt. Hawkins (noon), encountering snow covered terrain that slowed us down a bit. Another hour and another mile brought us to Throop Peak, where we took a 20-minute break in pleasant, sunny weather. Carlo was not eager to continue to Mt. Baden-Powell; so I left him while I hiked to Baden-Powell, passing over Mt. Burnham en route, much of it snow covered. Great views. I left Baden-Powell about 3:00P, tiring and moving slowly before rejoining Carlo, who had waited patiently for me at Throop Peak (5:00PM). As it became dark, we made a few time consuming mistakes following the return route, and it wasn’t until 7:30P that we reached the car after a very full day.
