Ascent Trip Report

Made an attempt in 2012 from the Skyline Trail via the route description in the Olympia Climbing Guide which said "take the class 2 ridge to the summit...". Wrong! We made it to the false summmit, point 5,459), but could not get past an intervening hump without doing a rock lead (we had a scramble rope but no pro). We dropped 600' to the north, but no avail. Turns out you need to drop about 1,000' on the north to get around the ridge and into the north basin. So this year we went back from the East side. Left the North Fork trailhead at 7am, dropped bivy gear in Trapper Shelter, hiked up the trail another 1.5 miles, and left the trail heading north where the map says "mile 12", stayed right of the creek that descends from the lake below point 4,642. Map shows a shoulder that has largest contour lines that ascends all the way to the right side of point 4,642. Very steep and brushy, downed logs. Pick up a bit of a game trail here and there. Generally can hear the creek to the left. Above 4,000' pick up a good game trail, circles to right of point 4,642, then cuts left of point 5,408. Drop to the north on steep scree at the col between point 5,408 and Zindorf. Continue on around on the right until find a steep gully under the face of Zindorf, ascend the gully, then climb thin ledges, cedar trees, and whatever you can to the summit. Class 3+ for 30 feet. We did not use a rope on ascent or descent. Found a plastic pill bottle with 1/2" of water and a few soggy pieces of paper, unreadable, left a new register. 8.5 hours round trip from Trapper Shelter. Bivied in the shelter overnight and then quick hike out in the morning.
