Ascent Trip ReportThe adventure started with Marisa , Joe Justin , Brian & I deciding to hike up to Chimney Pond on Wednesday ......We started our hike from Roaring Brook around noon & the rain was falling. We all started up the trail dry but then things changed :-) ...It was raining so hard parts of the trail was 1-2 ft under water. Streams took over the trail...When we got to Chimney Ponds we took over the bunkhouse....We started a fire & started to dry our stuff .We had it up to 80 degrees in there for drying LOL .
The next day the rain had stopped & we started our hike up Hamlin Ridge Tr (mini Knifes Edge) over Hamlin for #66 . Now we took the NW Basin Tr over to Katahdin. When we got to the Saddle Tr we spotted a bear . I tried telling people that there was a bear & no one either heard or believed me till they turned around & we watched it run down the Saddle Tr & then along the ridge
Now for our push to the peak of Katahdin. The trail was loose rocks most of the way up. But then finally we could see the sign ....Brian & I got to it together along with a few thru hikers finishing their journey .We took our photos & ate lunch & started down .
When we hit the Saddle Tr we all looked down & said "This will be fun" 1.2 miles back to Chimney Ponds short but steep & looks of loose rocks & a lot of water on the trail .Finally at our bunkhouse we changed & ate & that nite we had a full house.
Friday morning we got up & started our hike down to Roaring Brook C.G. The trail this time was a lot drier than when we came up Wednesday .We crossed one bridge with no water running under it but Wednesday the water was rushing down .At the bottom we signed out at Ranger Office & Brian & I gave each other high fives for our accomplishment & great journey
I'd like to thank Marisa , Joe & Justin for making our hike up Katahdin a memorable & enjoyable hike ...Glad you guys were there & thanks for our cake at the end :-) |
