Ascent Trip ReportWTC trip to check out Palisade Glacier. Trailhead by Glacier Lodge (up from Big Pine). Camp at Black Lake. Round trip distance approx 22 miles, 5300'. (GPS low battery and skipped). Glacier retreating and rapidly melting. One participant said that it takes 1000' of snow to make 1 inch of glacier ice (no mention of quality of snow). The two lobes of the glacier are no longer connected, with hundreds of feet between them. Bottom corner of large lobe below North Pal at the lake is at 12,000' per GPS, which is 200' below the TOPO elevation for that point. I assume this means 200' of glacier ice existed at that point when the map was made.
