Ascent Trip ReportThe easy way to do this peak is to drive south from Highway 12 on the Elk Summit Road between 15 and 16 miles to FR 358, which heads west. Follow FR 358 (high clearance advised) to its end in the saddle south of lake 6310. The road beyond this point, which is shown on the topo map as continuing to lake 6121, has been closed to vehicles.
For the hike, follow the old road to lake 6121 and continue on its north side. Before you reach the end of the lake turn right (north) on trail 46 which is signed for Friday Pass and other points. Follow this well-maintained trail to about the 6800' level and a fork. Keep right on a less-maintained trail which goes past Swamp Lake and up to the vicinity of Friday Pass. Note that the actual trail on the ground is pretty well defined, but it differs from the mapped route in several areas.
Before the trail reaches the highest point of the ridge a sharp right fork on an even lesser trail will put you on the path to Grave Peak. Again, this trail is not exactly where mapped but is fairly easy to follow. There are some unmapped switchbacks, and the trail drops further than shown. There is a spot where a switchback leads you down to the lakes in the basin to the left (or so I suppose; I didn't follow it) and the trail to Grave Peak continues through a screen of brush before continuing to the peak. The very end of the trail will require a bit of class 2 work. |
