Ascent Trip Report

Arrived by car the night before and camped at 4th of July/Buckingham right alongside the North Fork Middle Boulder Creek. Awoke on 820 at around 0400 and started on ascent around 0430. Trail became a little tough to follow after turning NE just after the intersection of the Arapaho Pass and Arapaho Glacier trails, though carrying on in a general northeasterly direction allowed us to reacquire the tread rather quickly. Coming out of the vegetation around 11570' experienced relative high winds. The rest of the ascent was undertaken in base layer over t-shirt plus knit cap and wind-breaking hooded rain gear on top, long pants on bottom. Reached the saddle overlooking the glacier by about 0815 and took an extended break before the push to the summit. Final push is moderately challenging scramble -- maintaining three points of contact is crucial. Almost lost my balance a number of times. Summit at approximately 1027. Spent a good hour on top eating lunch and contemplating taking a crack at North Arapaho before noticing the time and deciding to simply make a measured and well-paced descent. Moving down the scramble section required deliberate and careful holds and jumps. Until we reached the Pass/Glacier trail intersection on descent, we had not seen another human since the night before.

For two relatively out of shape hikers, this was a challenging and rewarding end of summer climb. Moderate trails, challenging scrambles, wonderful views, and no crowds.
