Ascent Trip ReportDid a clockwise loop up Bunnell Trail, to Kilkenny Ridge, down Unknown Pond. Planned to trail run, however noted my heart rate was much higher than normal under a standard level of stress. Bunnell Trail showed a lot of fresh moose prints, and some muddy sections (despite recent dry weather). Follows the brook with many opportunities to splash water to cool off. Cabot Hut was old but nice with 4 sleeping spots. Note mentioned that the nearby spring was dry. Many people stopped by old fire tower location thinking it was the summit – still had another .4 miles to go. Viewless summit on Cabot, same with Bulge. The Horn had very nice views as well as some fun “rock hopping” near the summit. Although the Kilkenny Ridge trail is pretty flat, it is narrow with large rocks and pitched footing making it difficult to move fast/run. Unknown Pond offers great views back to the Horn. Believe at least 3 groups were already in the tent sites by 3 PM. Unknown Pond Trail was very muddy, and had seasonal brush overgrowing the trail. Much of this trail was runnable coming down. The last half mile or so is very flat, wide path that had 4-wheeler tracks which made for a very quick end to the trip.
Most people parked at the end of the road past the Unknown Pond trailhead (about .1 mile). Would’ve provided more shade for my car.
