Ascent Trip ReportHiked in the day before to camp at Anderson Lake. Climbed Morpheus on the way to Cascade. From Morpheus dropped down on the north side and traversed to an easy gap at 5200' west of Pt 5364. This avoids cliff bands on the ridge trending S toward Dream Lake. Continued traversing talus and south of Pt 5196 just before Smith Lake which worked well. Got on the summit ridge just N of the summit from where it was a short 50' scramble to the top. It was a warm day and in spite of trying to drink lots of water all three of us got somewhat dehydrated from the long traverse across the light colored rocks reflecting sunlight. I had a long slow walk out to the trailhead with my legs threatening to cramp up the whole way. This route ended up being more grueling than the statistics would indicate, even starting from a camp at Anderson Lake, but there are no technical difficulties -- we never considered using the light rope we brought along. The original 1995 register was on top. We were the 9th party to sign. I know of at least 1 winter party that did not sign. |
