Ascent Trip ReportOpting to wait a day because of all the rain/snow we had this weekend and originally wanting to do Blakiston, we decided to do a smaller mountain. We headed out to Crowsnest mountain after finding the trail, we were off. The climb up to the mountain was relatively easy although very muddy, it was a nice steady incline up with little to no snow. once we started beyond the tree line however that's when the snow started to get deeper and deeper. while making our way up we came across a sole hiker (wes) who was coming down due to the snow and being alone. we offered him to join us and he was happy too (this was nice because he was well experienced with the hike and has climbed it well over 10 times)
we made our way up and about half way, the snow kept getting deeper and deeper (now about knee level) and the fog started to move it this made even the easiest scrambles sketchy and time consuming due to the ice. we all decided to try to make it to the chain before calling it and turning back. lead by wes we trudged through the snow now about mid thigh level passed some amazing scenery of iced out cliff faces and the 7 sisters or the 3 that we could see! As we made our way to the start of the Gully the snow got unbearably deep (now waist deep) here unfortunately is where we called it and took some pictures (thanks wes!) and headed back down. the climb down was pretty easy the snow made it nice to cruise down in wes was on a roll and we just took our time and enjoyed the rest of the day. at the end of the trail we un layered and got in my car to drive home. All in all it was a great day even if we dident summit I dont think I will be able to bag this peak now this year with all the snow, but next year its all mine! |
