Ascent Trip ReportIt was a Monday and I sat at my desk looking toward the front range, nothing but warm sunshine and blue skies... Only days prior Josh and I retreated from Magpie Peak due to snow and rain. I gotta get back out there, but shouldn't attempt Magpie without a partner... what else... Raggedtop! Fuck it Let's go!
I set out right after work toward Girdwood with a brief stop at the house to grab an ultra light pack. This would need to be a tactical ascent, jog where I can jog and minimize rests. If not, I'd be home well after midnight. I reached the Crow Pass trail head by 6:45 and raced off within 5 minutes. I followed the main trail for around a mile and emerged from the brush at an obvious scree gully heading up to the west. I slid down to the river and found a couple boulder to hop across and then followed the brush free gully up to just above alder line. From this point I side hilled south west to the main valley north of the summit. On the way up I took the main valley to the saddle, then the shoulder to the summit. I would not recommend this approach. It was doable, but it was a good bit steeper than I anticipated and the rock quality was poor. I reached the summit in just under 2 hours and placed a summit register. On the way down I opted to follow a sheep trail down the north east ridge. This was significantly better and would recommend this over the north west ridge. There were a couple steep sections and a lot of scree, but it made for a quick decent. I followed my side hill tracks back to the main trail with a total round trip time of 3h 20mins. My garmin tracks say 6.4 miles, elevation gain/loss of 4,030ft. I don't want to sound cocky or anything, but I was jogging with a minimal pack and water, not hiking so keep that in mind if you use my time when you plan your ascent. |
