Ascent Trip ReportOn 8/19/15, I did an out-and-back to Mount Shaw and Black Snout in the Ossipee Mountains. Shaw is on the New England Fifty Finest list.
From my parking space off NH 171 near Sodom Rd, I followed the Mt. Shaw Trail, marked by sparse red blazes, to the ridge crest. To start, it followed newer woods roads past some neat cascades to the LRCT boundary. From there, it followed older, rough woods to the last water crossing, then basically attacked the mountainside, climbing quite steeply at times. (Also saw a deer here, but it ran away before I could whip out my camera.) It then flattened out and intersected with the Black Snout Trail. I turned left onto this trail and followed it to the summit via switchbacks on old carriage roads, passing a spur path to Black Snout early on. 0.4 mi from the top, the High Ridge trail veered left.
The summit was open and grassy (and filled with dragonflies), but the views were mediocre due to the high haze. I took a break here and then headed back down, stopping at Black Snout on the way.
Mt. Shaw was #22 on the NE 50 Finest list, and it was my last NH peak on said list. Onward to VT and ME!
