Ascent Trip Report

Friday Welch/Dickey hike in the very hot sun a day after doing Monroe & Washington. This was the hike I was christened "The Man in the Orange Shirt" by a group of girl scouts who were trailing me and often spotted me in their line of sight while I remained within earshot.

This is a gorgeous hike on 52WAV that was slightly tougher than I expected. Lots of steep rock slabs that were very similar to Mt Whiteface. The initial hike up Welch takes you to open ledges with great views of the Sandwich Range, especially Jennings Peak, Sandwich Dome, and The Tripyramids. At this point, the real fun begins as you make your way to the true summit of Welch with ever-growing views as you ascend.

For Dickey, its a gentle descent into the partially wooded col followed by another steep jaunt up Dickey which has incredible views, especially Tecumseh but other points north as well. I also bushwhacked to the Dickey East Summit for even better views. You can see it from the main summit. It's marked by a rock cairn and definitely worth the extra effort.

The descent is partially covered for the upper portion, providing incredible views to the east and where I just came from. A great hike on a gorgeous sunny August day!
