Ascent Trip Report

Did a Monroe / Washington hike on a Thursday in August. I assumed less traffic but is there ever truly less traffic on Washington?

I parked at Pinkham and took the Tuck Ravine trail all the way to Tuck Junction. It was clear and gorgeous on the way up, but once I reached the top of the ravine, I was in the clouds. I decided to do Monroe first, so at the junction I took the Tuck Crossover trail which I was all alone on all the way to the Crawford Path. Gorgeous trail in the clouds littered with cairns. When I reached Crawford Path I took a left and passed by the Lakes of the Clouds and the hut (still in the clouds).

The trip up to Monroe was short and easy though I was confused first by the false summit due to cloud cover. I finally reached the true summit and spotted the pin in the rock. I snapped some pictures and returned down the Monroe Trail and stopped at the hut for a coffee. I resumed my hike back up the Crawford Path to Washington which by that point was in even denser clouds and was beginning to get downright cold so I threw on some long sleeves. At the Washington summit, I had to wait in line and was subjected to stares by all the lazy people who drove up.

For my descent, I took Tuck Ravine to Lion Head Trail. On this descent, the clouds disappeared and the sun came out and I was blessed with gorgeous views at Lions Head itself. As I descended from Lions Head, the weather took a nasty turn and before I made it below the treeline, I was inundated by rain then sleet then rain again. Afterwards the sun came out again and there was a gorgeous rainbow in front of me.

I continued down Lion Head Trail to Tuck Ravine and back to my car at Pinkham. I was soaking wet. It was a great hike in general and was indicative of the wild and changing weather we often read about in the White Mountains.
