Ascent Trip ReportAn easy track walk with short wacks to 4 areas .... 1.6 miles, 45 minutes RT.
After visiting the Iosco COHP we went west to the Oscoda COHP, expecting a long walk ... it turned out to be a short/quick visit. This county has 4 candidate high point areas all besides/easily-accessible from a track.
From the 4-county-corners (Oscoda/Alcona/Iosco/Ogemaw) we zeroed our odo and drove west on Taber Road.
0.00M ... left westbound on Taber Road
2.98M ... sharp left on Maltby Hill Road.
3.23M ... right turn on Mack Lake Trail northwest bound.
5.53M ... left turn onto unsigned Old Baldy Road but numbered #4979. A sign advises that this is a seasonal road. (GPS 44.52242,-83.96389).
7.33M ... arrived at 4-way intersecion with ORV Track #H57. We parked here this was my TH (44.51249,-83.99275). The ORV Track #H57 actually crosses Old Baldy twice before this intersection.
I walked the ORV Track #H57 on the right, as it winds easterly about .5M to a Junction where #H57 turns sharply left (south), I stayed straight (north) as this track climbs .25 miles to its end at AREA 4. The other 3 areas are just right of the track at 15 yards. I visited them in the order listed here.
AREA 1 (44.51503,-83.99990), a sharp ridge.
AREA 2 (44.51519,-83.99911) is lower in elevation than #1, a small depression is between the two.
AREA 3 (44.51594,-83.99885), old tower foundations are still there.
AREA 4 (44.51643,-83.99876) old foundations to one side, end of track and lower in elev. than #3.
It was somewhat difficult to site between areas 2 & 3 (due to the trees), however my best effort with my not-too-reliable eye level told me that #3 is lower than #2 ..... in other words there is only one HP here and that is #1.
However with the road and old foundation construction, and the depression one needs to ask what is natural here. All are very easy so its best to touch them all.
We were lucky to find Old Baldy Road in good driveable condition. A nice short day, we overnighted at the Oscoda County Campground in Mio, after visiting the local Mio Mountain.
