My third trip up to the Adirondacks this season. Getting to be a routine, similar to climbing the 46.
I'm at 24 Towers with four to go and the plan was to knock off Wakely and Vanderwhacker on this trip. both were five mile hikes plus each was to have a mile of steep climbing.
Started from home around 3:00 on Wednesday the 5th. I was planning to visit Mary Lou again for the first night and then use trail-head area for the second night. Reason being to get an early start on the second climb so I could get home to start putting things together for camping with Joseph.
I drove straight through to Amsterdam and purchased a Sub near the Mall. Then drove to the same rest area I had been to on the last journey, just past the town of Wells. At 6:08 I was at the rest area and consumed half the sub. Then I took a 1.5 miles road walk to stretch my legs before heading up to Indian Lake.
I also searched out the spring on Route 30 so I can stop there on future adventures. It's marked with American Flags but at the speed we travel, the overgrown weeds, and the size of the flags it's easy to miss. Location is 3.5 miles North of the Jessup River and 1/4 mile past the sign that indicates the distance to Indian Lake - 15 and Tupper Lake - 56.
Getting into Mary Lous just around 8:10 and we talked until 12:15. Time for bed. (of course, I ate one of the cookies I'd bought before retiring.)
The night was cool but with the extra blanket I was comfortable. Slept well and checked the clock at 6:54 AM Rose at 7:14 and by 7:30 was on the road headed to Stewarts for a cup of coffee.
Early fishermen (3) were out on the causeway fishing the southern shoreline.
The trip down Cedar River Road was no problem and after eating the second half of the sub. (breakfast) at 8:34 I was starting the hike.
Arrival at the tower was 10:22 GPS reading were pretty far from the stats available online.
GPS 3765' 2.68 miles 1978' - 3675' or 1697' elevation gain.
The tower was tall and scary, ten sets of stairs and then an angle iron ladder into the cap. The wind was strong but the tower wasn't effected by that. I took a few pictures, tried to call home and couldn't and vacated the tower as soon as I could. Back on the ground I pulled a crate from the observers cabin and sat on the porch getting my rest and some food. I was the first person up this morning and no one arrived while I was there. My core temp began to drop and it wasn't to long before I got goose-bumps and needed to start moving, at 11:02 I started down.
On the hike down I finally came upon other hikers. first three guys (late teens), the two separate couples consisting of an older man and a young woman (I was thinking a father and daughter team), then two men (father and son, I thought) and finally a husband and wife team. Polite greeting were exchanged, I don't think anyone asked about how far they still had to go, no matter, I usually joke around about something but leave the hike for them to discover on their own.
back to the car at 12:50 PM.
GPS - 5.42 miles total 1811' - 3786' or 1975' of elevation gain. GPS said 2.7 both up and down, yet the hike is listed at 3.2 each way.
The rest of the day was spent traveling and fishing (no fish were caught) At 4:15 I stopped my play and headed into Speculator for a swim to clean-up for dinner.
Ate at Logans Bar and Grill based on a recommendation from a person I met at a farmers market.
