Ascent Trip ReportI emailed the property owners in advance to ensure the weekends posted are ok to visit: firstname.lastname@example.org,
This is about a 3 hour drive from downtown Chicago, not in rush hour.
I have been living in Chicago for almost a year, and, before today, had yet to hike the high peak (unacceptable, I know). For all the procrastinating on this peak, it ended up being a bit of a treasure. I arrived at the trail head to (surprisingly) see a whole line of cars parked along the road. Since this peak is only open to the public on four weekends out of the year, this seems to turn into a bit of a convention for peak-baggers. The hike was un-challenging: maintained road, hot weather, blistering mid-day sun. The view was just ok. But the people I ran into were fascinating. Individuals traded stories of their favorite summits, and tips of different routes to take on the more technical peaks. I got sage advice on taking in the experience, not simply checking off the boxes, and even got a hiking buddy for Mt Marcy (NY). Overall, I'm glad I got out of the city for a day and ticked off this box.
