Ascent Trip Report

An extraordinarily good trip! I was prepared with Dennis' GPS track, and all set to go around the backside of the mountain, ascending from Copper Creek. However, as I looked up at the east ridge of the peak, it looked positively tantalizing. So at a convenient spot, I forded the West Fork of the Lostine and set out cross-country. Things were excellent for a while, but I tried to get onto the ridge immediately and found myself cliffed out on sand-and-gravel-covered granite. Extremely unpleasant and dangerous going. I retreated a ways, regrouped, and climbed into the basin to the north, keeping close up against the cliffs of the east ridge. After climbing a lot of talus, I found a good spot to gain the ridge (see track). From there it was simple walking, mostly on good ground with a little rock-hopping, to a spectacular viewpoint. I mean, you can see everything in the range: Aneroid, Sacajawea/Matterhorn, Twin Peaks, Cusick, Pete's Point, Eagle Cap, Red Mountain, Krag Peak; it's all laid out in front of you. My only complaint about the summit was that it was infested with small insects that swarmed all over me and chased me around until I ceded the ground back to them. Nonetheless, a remarkable day of climbing.
