Ascent Trip ReportEdward Earl's excellent report worked perfectly for the ascent of Hogback, via Wildcat. I also met Richard "Arch" Archer and got his blessing to leave my car at his place when I returned the next morning. He also said he would square things with the landowner. He's a good guy who lives alone, and he invited me in. I took the time to chat for the better part of an hour. Also left him a copy of the topo printouts after my return, to help him settle the question (with his landlord) over whether Wildcat or Hogback is higher. As suggested by Edward, I followed the long ridge east from area six until the house was clearly in view less than 1/2 mile away. The only question was whether a non-cliffy route existed off the ridge. I finally found one that was steep but not dangerous. Keep looking, and if a route looks cliffy, work your way further down the ridgeline. Once off the ridge, it's a few-minutes walk back to the house. On this date, the temperature was 101 when I returned to the car, and I had not brought enough water. This hike totals close to five miles with a lot of ups and downs. If doing it in hot weather, take extra water.
