Ascent Trip ReportWoke up early and left the hut around 6h with my 9yr old daughter Alissa. Beautiful sunrise around the Salanfe valley. Terrain changed rapidly from Alpine pastures to steeper rocky scree paths. Very foreshortened views of the Dents. Reached Pierre Carree after about 3h steady climbing. Continued climbing started to reveal great views first of the surrounding Cols, the Lake & the Tour Saliere. Just below the ht, the view opened out completely to reveal the Mont Blanc massif, and the Swiss Alps from Zermatt to the Grand Combin. Superb! The hut is an aluminium box tied to the mountain. Guarded in Summer by a Swiss Alpine Club guardian - who was ready with hot mint tea! Took a long lunch break & many photos of the view & the glacier. Long descent back to Salanfe where we had a quick dip in the lake & Swiss Fondue at the refuge before continuing down to the car at the Vallon de Van. Superb trip very highly recommended - very proud of Alissa who took this fairly long & strenuous day (for a 9 yr old) in her stride! She was rewarded by a trip to the St Bernard dog kennels in Martigny on the way home! |
