Ascent Trip ReportOops, I meant to climb Oval Peak. Oh well, still hammered out another Bulger, and this one with a great view. From the top you can see many of the other Bulgers. Sharing a pass with the towering Star Peak to the East, and north you can see the ovoid Oval Peak. You can see much of the North Cascades including the Pickets. You can see many of the nonvolcanic giants such as Bonanza and Goode, and on a clear day, apparently you can see 3 volcanoes, Rainier, Glacier Peak and Baker, though I could only make out the bottom of Glacier beneath some clouds around its summit. You can also just make out the Enchantments. There was a view of the burn area of the Wolverine (2015) fire along the shores of Lake Chelan.
The route I took was from the West Fork Buttermilk Creek trail a somewhat steep trail that follows the Buttermilk creek almost the entire time. The trail was very muddy, but very easy to follow. Somewhere along the way, I missed the turn off to go to oval, and instead walked all the way to Fish Pass. At first I thought Courtney was Oval, as they do look somewhat similar, but I knew that Oval was higher than Star and Courtney looked very small comparatively. From Fish pass, you pretty much go straight up the ridge line to the summit. The scramble is a through scree and talus slope, but both are very packed in. Its almost like a scree pavement. It is easy. Made it to the summit from Fish Pass in about 30 minutes. When I got to the top I looked North and immediately spotted Oval peak, and new I screwed up. It was okay though, because that view of everything as well as the fire was second to none. A long, tiring, but overall good climb.
