Ascent Trip Report

This was a private hike with George Christiansen, Winnette Butler, Bruce Craig, and Miriam Khamis. We had original planned to only do six peaks, but when we got down to Carlsbad, we realized, with the help of Miriam and Winnette smart phones, there were a number of easy Peakbagger peaks in the area. We ended up getting 16 for the day, which is a new record for us.
For the first one, Wire, we exited 5 at 76, north on Bennet to Airport Road, turn left, go about 100 yards and park at a paved road on your right with a locked gate. We walked up the paved road about a ½ mile to the summit. The summit is totally fenced in with a 6 foot high fence with barbed wire on the top. We just walked around the fence. No way to get in. We didn’t find any register or BM.
For Fire Mtn., from Wire, back to 76, turn left (east) to Foussat, turn right (south) to Oceanside, left (east) to E. Camino Real (S11), right (south) to Fire Mtn. Road. Turn right (west), go 1/10 mile to Yucca Rd. turn left, go about a block. You will see an empty lot with a fence around it. It is the only empty lot in the area. Since we were in a residential area, it didn’t seem prudent to attempt to climb over or under the fence. We did see a rock cairn that was mention in a trip report. It was in the middle of the lot.
For the next set of Peakbagger peaks, we inputted the Peakbagger waypoints in our GPS and reviewed the various trip reports. On most of these, it was difficult to determine where the actual point was. There were no BM or obvious bumps; I won’t repeat the trip reports as you can review them on Peakbagger.
The next stop was Carlsbad State Beach High Point, then South Carlsbad State Beach High Point, then San Leucadia SB HP, then White Benchmark. White had a plaque honoring a local resident. Also, there was a BM next to the Plaque.
From White, it was on to Quail Hollow View Point, then Moonlight SB HP, San Elijo SB HP, Cardiff SB HP, Torry Pines State Reserve HP. There was a cement block that had a BM at one time on this Torry Pines.
From the Reserve, it was on to Torry Pines HP and Torry BM. Both of these are in a Calif. State Park and there is a $12 day use fee. From the state park entrance, drive up a paved road to the visitor center and park. Walk southeast on a dirt road about 1/3 mile. On your right (west), you will see couple of Torry Pine trees. That is the HP. There was a use trail through the brush to the trees. For the BM, go back to the Torry Pines Overlook and go to the top where you will find a BM.
From the Torry Pines, we head over to Marron and Green Cake Hill. We parked at Lot 18, walked over a down orange fence to a high point due north. This was Marron Summit. It was basically a brush heap. We found no register of BM. From Marron, we followed a use trail west to Green. It is on a preserve and we had to look a little to find a spot where we could crawl under the fence. We did not find any register or BM, but did find a old sign with the name of the peak.
The last peak was Hinton. It is also in the preserve, not far from Green Cake. However, you could never reach it without a major brush whack. Instead, we drove around to the Buena Vista Park. At the end of their parking lot, you will see two roads going south. Take the one to your right (west) side. Follow it about 3/10th of a mile and you will see a locked gate entrance to the preserve. On the way in, we climbed over this fence. We walked about 100 feet and found a large opening in the fence. Be careful. There was a lot of poison oak around it. At this point, follow a good use trail to sign pointing to Hinton on your right. Follow the somewhat brushy trail but easy to follow, to the summit. We did not find any register or BM. Hinton was our 16th and last peak for the day.
