Ascent Trip ReportColin and I met Andrew Hamilton and his hiking buddy Kyle at Kite Lake about 6pm. Andrew had already climbed 48 14ers in eight days during his attempt to better Cave Dog's 15 year old FKT (Fastest Known Time).
I couldn't keep up during the ascent to the Democrat/Cameron saddle and went on to Cameron and waited for Andrew. I joined Andrew and Colin when they reached the Cameron summit. Andrew was concerned about Kyle, who had joined Andrew summiting Huron, La Plata and Sherman already that day, as he suffered with altitude sickness and was trailing so I waited for Kyle. Kyle and I connected again with Andrew and Colin as they returned from the Lincoln summit and we all summited Bross together.
Weather was drizzly and very foggy. We reached Bross and donned our headlamps for the descent back to Kite Lake. We reached the lake about 9:30pm. Colin and I got in our cars; Andrew and Kyle walked down the road to the official endpoint of their hike (3,000' below the Bross summit - ~2.5 miles below Kite Lake).
Even though I knew I couldn't keep pace with him, Andrew's crew asked me to continue with him on to Quandary so I watched them feed him, remove boots and clothes and insert him in the sag van to catch an hour of sleep. It took about 40 minutes to reach the Quandary trailhead. His team let him sleep a few more minutes, woke him up, removed him from the van and stood him up like a log. He stretched a bit, thanked the group of well wishers who had come to the trailhead to cheer him on, and put on his pack and headed off into the darkness along with me and three other hiking partners at about 11:30pm. I made about 1000' gain and called it a night.
Andrew reached the Quandary summit that night and finished the remainder of the 58 Colorado 14ers about 24 hours later for a new FKT (Fastest Know Time) for the Colorado 14ers of 9 days 21 hours and 51 minutes eclipsing the prior record that had stood for nearly 15 years by almost one day. I was on Longs Peak at 11,230' elevation when Andrew finished. |
