Ascent Trip Report

***WTC Experience Trip***
led by Mat Kelliher, co-leaders: Sridhar Gullapalli, Pat Arredondo

This was a two-day trip over June 27 - 28. We came in the first day and set up camp along the SE shore of Cliff Lake, and then headed off to Dogtooth Peak and Peak 10179. Yuki struggled with the altitude all the way up to camp, so she and Mark stayed in camp. Raelynn wanted to hang out and fish at Cliff Lake, so she stayed too and did so. She reportedly caught one little fish.

Dogtooth Pk was 1.6 miles (one way) from camp with 810' of gain, 310' loss. The first 0.9 mile are on trail, then we headed generally east XC to traverse Pk 101179 at about the 10,000' contour. We headed up a line of weakness on the northern outcrop, Dogtooth Peak, a touch south of the seeming high point over class 2 terrain, and worked up and around to the eastern side of the high point. A broken-up weak zone on the east face allows access to the summit of Dogtooth, but note that you'll get into about 50 vertical feet of moderately exposed 3rd Class terrain with one spot where you'll need to make one or two 4th class moves to proceed. I scouted the route and reached the summit, but this climb exceeds the scope of an I-rated Sierra Club hike, so I had to abandon the goal of getting anyone in the group to the summit; instead we all relaxed a bit at the base of the 3rd Class portion before proceeding to Peak 10179, which was added to the database after this trip. Pk 10179 is a nice easy peak, Class 1 from either the trails to the west or from Dogtooth to its west.

Saturday night at Happy Hour Tanya got stung by a mosquito on the corner of her left eye; when she woke up Sunday she'd had such a severe reaction to the bite that her eye had swollen completely shut. Not knowing what kind of terrain we'd encounter enroute to Three Sisters, Tanya stayed in camp while the rest of us went for the summit. This was a good hike up the ridge line at the SW corner of Cliff Lake, west and then NW, up the ridge line and then across a couple of real small meadows, then up to the eastern ridge of Three Sisters and then up it to the summit. Camp to summit took about 1 hour, 50 minutes. From the summit we returned to camp, packed up, and headed out.

Mileage for the whole trip was 15.9 miles, 3,600' of gain
