Ascent Trip ReportTook my three boys (10, 8, and 6)on a three day, two night, hike and camp in the Wachipauka Pond area in NH's Whites. We found the trailhead easily enough on NH rt 25 in Warren NH (large pull off parking area). First day we hiked in on the Wachipauka Pond Trail towards Wachipauka Pond and Webster Slide Mt. At 2.3 mi., we arrived at the trail junction of Webster Slide Trail and the spur trail down to the pond. We quickly found a well established campsite a hundred feet or so from the water's edge and set up camp. Day two we hiked up to Webster Slide Mt (a moderate climb with obstructed pond views) and hiked most of the way around the pond before settling down for the day at the camp site. The boys spent the rest of the day playing in the water, exploring and lounging around camp. Day three we hiked back out to parking area.
This was a great overnight hike for young kids. At 2.3 mi., my 10 and 8 y.o. had no trouble with their 15-20lb packs. My 6 y.o. carried his 8lb pack for about half the hike. The distance was perfect for my less experienced 6 y.o. We peaked Webster Slide Mt (without packs) with little effort and cruised back out on day 3. The campsite was large, with a spot for our 4 man tent, and had a fire pit. |
