Ascent Trip Report

We parked at the AMC Highland Center in Crawford Notch State Park before embarking up the Mt. Willard Trail behind the Conway Scenic Railroad tracks. The hike was just short of 5 miles round trip and traversed over rocky terrain through a forest consisting of northern hardwoods and paper birch which transitioned to spruces and firs and finally to boreal forest dominated by balsam firs. Two streams had to be crossed, and at one point on the right side of the trail (ascending) there was a spectacular view of "Centennial Pool", an open area next to one of the mountain streams. At the summit, a spectacular view straight down Crawford Notch was offered. Additional sights included a view of the backside of the Presidential Range, the summit of Mount Washington, clear views of Mount Webster and Mount Field, and a view of Willey Pond and the backside of the Frankenstein Cliffs. Additionally, the site of the avalanche of 1826 on Mount Willey was able to be seen. A wonderful hike through beautiful terrain on a lovely day with truly breathtaking views. Recommended highly.
