Ascent Trip ReportFelt so energized after just knocking out Clouds Rest in the morning that the next thing I knew, I was staring at the May Lake trailhead, mind set of finally visiting Hoffmann.
One fun thing I learned from the hike is that the neither of the two fin-shaped formations, as seen from May Lake to the east, is actually Hoffmann. Hoffmann lies behind them both, and across a small alpine meadow ("meadow" seen from the summit).
Mile 0.0: May Lake trailhead
Mile 1.1: Arrive at May Lake. Follow the Mt Hoffmann Trail heading west, parallel to the lake
Mile 1.4: Trail turns southwest and becomes rockier. Keep an eye out for cairns
Mile 1.9: Trail turns northwest (around 9610ft), steeply graded. I lost it a few times, but if you just keep heading up, you'll eventually find more cairns showing the obvious way.
Mile 2.1: Trees thin and the trail opens up but still continues a 20-25% grade climb. Looking back, I have a great view of Clouds Rest where I was a few hours earlier.
Mile 2.4: Summit comes into view at the end of the meadow. It has a tower on top. A closer look shows several options for the final climb. I opted for the solid class 3 route on the right; others opted for a mix of Class 2-3 towards the middle.
Mile 2.9: Summit in all of its glory.
