Ascent Trip Report

We left Montana Blanca car park at 10.40 on a cool sunny morning and made good progress to the foot of the lava flow. Here the ground steepened appreciably and it become more difficult underfoot. We were glad to reach the refugio at 18.30 for our overnight stop. There was no drinking water available as the cable car had been closed for at least 3 days. The hosts were however happy for us to boil their stored water so we could fill our bottles. Knowing we would not be at the top at sunrise the following morning we were keen to witness the sunset. What a spectacle it was! There was the shadow of Teide on the sea of cloud (which almost invariably surrounds the peak) AND there was the shadow of a plume coming off the summit.
The next morning we were the last to leave at about 06.30. At dawn, we were in position to see the early risers and quick walkers assembled on the summit, probably all the other 58 people we had shared the hut with! We had a late breakfast outside the top cable car station. It was again not running due to high winds. Thinking ahead, we had obtained a permit for entry to the summit cone, knowing that we would not be back through the barrier by 09.00. In the event there was no one there to check our pass. We reached the summit at 10.30 and had the place to ourselves. That made our success all the more special. We could not stand on the top, only touch it, as the wind was so strong and gusty (100 kph), we feared being blown off. We were fascinated by the fumaroles near the summit.
The descent was a straightforward retracing of our steps, this time passing the refugio on our way back to the car and a return to our hotel and hearty evening meal. Tired but happy.
