Ascent Trip Report

To keep fresh and in-shape to finish up my W35 this year, decided to join in on another Hudson Valley Hiker (HVH) Catskill hike – Redline 3500 Series: Big Indian & Eagle via Segar Trail. I bag 2-3500 peaks (Big Indian and Eagle), get outdoors in beautiful weather, and cover a portion of the All-Trail patch requirements! Beautiful, cool day that later turned very sunny and warm. The trails were muddy from the heavy rain the day before. Only a few of us – Rich Williams (organizer), Chuck (sweep), Tova, me, Tom, Shawn, Ethan). Tova and I were the only women on the hike that day

The day started out cool initially. We were mostly in the woods, shaded. Segar trail is pretty flat. Pine Hill West Branch trail is much rockier with elevation gain / losses. There were 3 stream crossings. I fell in 1st crossing, but dried up by the time we reached Eagle. I decided to step in the waters to avoid slipping & falling again. I carried poles, but did not use them. It would have been advantageous to use them for the river crossings for balance. There were lots of stops initially on Segar Trail. Segar Trail does pass by a ‘path’ to summit Doubletop, a little past the bench. We ran into the Catskill 3500 club planning to summit Doubletop from same parking area.

Nice day. It got warmer around 1:20pm. It was not windy at the summits / canisters. Plenty of trees, leaves. Wet and muddy, especially on Segar trail and near water. There were lots of black flies near water areas.

But all in all, not a strenuous hike; we took an easy pace. The bushwhacking to Big Indian was very short (~0.1 mile) off the Pine Hill West Branch Trail. Total estimated mileage 10.7 miles
