Ascent Trip Report

On anniversary trip and my wife has given me a half day pass each day and full day pass one day. This is a great hike to get acclimated to altitude . After breakfast with the wife, arrived at trailhead at 920 a.m. 45 degrees but no winds, mostly sunny. Perfect weather. Start at marked trailhead just to right of restrooms at Santa Fe Ski Basin parking lot. Immediately cross footbridge and take right at Windsor Trail #254 intersection. Next .7 miles is moderate climb of about 450-500 ft. At 1 mile you hit well marked fenced in Pecos Wilderness Boundary. Up to this point trail was in very good condition except for increasing number of snow and ice patches in shade. At gate to Pecos, take a left. There is a trail just to the right of the fence but lost it in snow after about 120 yards. Veered maybe 15 degrees to the right and soon encountered a very large area of fallen trees - some very large- tough scrambling so I finally backtracked and then started up again veering about 30 degrees to your right as you climb. Steep but doable grade without any scrambling. Still lot of snow and ice patches this morning. Reached peak about 1035. Small cairn. Beautiful hike but as expected the Aspen are so thick at the summit you can catch only a glimpse of Santa Fe below and surrounding peaks. Descended in 40 minutes slipping in the snow once. Great way to start a Saturday.
