Ascent Trip ReportThis was a last moment decision to go to the Cannon instead of Cashmere mountain. The weather was suppose to be good. We started hiking on the old abandoned road from the Stuart/Colchuck lake trailhead. In less than a mile we reached the landslide where we headed up the slopes. The first 1500 feet of the elevation gain were through rough bush/falling tree terrain, but easily manageable. After that the terrain was more pleasant with a lot of goat trails. On the way up around 6000-7000 ft we had to cross a few more falling tree areas with a bit steeper angle. Shortly after that we reaches the ridge. There was almost no snow to the top. Only last 300-400 ft of the elevation gain were snowed in. Most of the ridge is easily traversed on the right side. Just before the last steep step or one before that you can descend down towards Coney lake to bypass the step. We descended actually in the middle of the step before last which was a bit sketchy scramble, so better do it before or after that step. After traversing the last step we had an option to get up the ridge again and do easy scramble to the top or ascend the coluoir straight up. We decided to go up the coluoir as the snow was decent enough. One concern was a hanging cornice at the top of the left coluoir, but its path down, in case it collapses, could be avoided by ascending on the right side of the bottom coluoir. Shortly after that we were on the summit. After a little brake and photo session we headed to the Enchantments. We camped near the inspiration lake and the next morning headed down through the Aasgard pass to the Colchuck lake and back to the car. This was an amazing weekend in the mountains with my wife Mariya. |
