Ascent Trip ReportNice views on Harrison Drive where you park. Houses are still under construction there, and it is easy to park on the street. I hiked a short way down Grand Ridge Drive to the trail crossing. The trail is overrun with mountain bikers, walkers are a minority and one must get out of the way often. The unsigned trail to the summit is more obscure and overgrown, no bikers there. Easy to follow path through nice deep woods.
The trail dumps you out on 284th Ave SE, a private road, with a very clear sign saying "Private Road - No Trespassing". The high point on Grand Ridge is on public land behind the houses, so I backtracked on the path a short ways and started bushwhacking towards the right spot. The deadfall, vegetation, and brush was pretty bad for me in mid-May--basic northwest forest thrashing. I tried to follow faint old pathways (game trails) but they never went where I wanted. I did approach the back yards of the nearby houses, one of which featured a barking dog, and I could hear voices.
I finally located the high point, and I could tell it was an obvious rise and clearly the right spot. The King County GIS map with LIDAR contours shows two 1430' (+10') contours, a small one on 284th Ave SE entirely occupied by a house, and a big one in the woods, which seems almost certainly the highest natural ground. My observations were in line with the wooded contour, and I did not visit the house (given the signage and dog issues).
I found a slightly better bushwhack route back to the path--on the GPS track, it is the route that forms the E and N sides of the square-shaped path I traced. Most of that way was on some faint trails.
While hiking back I ran into an old work colleague on his mountain bike--small world.
