Ascent of Wilson Mountain on 2015-05-13Date: | Wednesday, May 13, 2015 | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | Peak: | Wilson Mountain | Location: | USA-Arizona | Elevation: | 7122 ft / 2170 m |
Ascent Trip ReportAscended via North Wilson trail to the remarkably open First Bench, then up to the summit plateau. Left the trail for a short bushwhack to the summit through tree fall from the 2006 forest fire. Found a register going way back to 2010 with just a handful of pages in it -- very satisfying. Why do so few people climb to this summit? The lack of a trail doesn't fully explain it because it's just 15 minutes off the main trail through open country. We saw a small herd of Coues Whitetail deer near the summit. On the way down we took the short side trail out and back to the recommended Sedona viewpoint. Descended via the South Wilson trail which is longer and hotter and takes it's sweet time descending. If I did it again I'd go up and down the more direct North Wilson trail.
