Ascent Trip ReportI exited at the Jean exit from the 15 freeway and drove past lovely Goodsprings. I reached the left fork mentioned by others and parked about 1/4 mile thereafter on Potosi Mountain Rd. I walked to the gate/trailhead. I was wishing on the way back that I had driven the whole way to this gate. The hike to the summit is on a serviced road, some of which is actually paved. The first third of it going up is a beast. I couldn't tell you how many times I had to stop, at least briefly, to catch my breath and assess how far I could make it up on the next push. When you reach the first saddle, the upgrade becomes a lot more manageable. After another turn, there's a neat view of Mt. Charleston, which was snow capped and Olympus-looking. It was in the mid 40s and a bit windy and for some dumb reason, I had left my hiking coat at home so I was a little cold. Off towards Charleston, there were grey clouds looming and I was getting worried about possible rain at this point so I picked up the pace when Charleston came into view. I skipped Potosi South and the Carol Lombard trail, but went up the middle tower area, which had a decent view, then went the additional short distance to the summit. For me, the best thing about this summit is saying that I did it. I didn't stay on top long and I headed straight back down the service road muttering a few times here and there about its steepness.
