Ascent Trip Report

Katrina and I started hiking this city peak around 1pm in 95F heat. It was taxing, but we brought 7.5L of water for the two of us and were happily over prepared. I wore some new hiking pants that turned out to not fit, and Katrina lent me an all cotton shirt to keep me cooler. We went up the Echo Canyon Trail which goes through a mellower area before hiding in the shadow of a massive cliff. The rocks are smooth and steep here, but there is a handrail for those who want it. We then were back in the sun and we dropped through a small dip before climbing through boulders and following the plethora of trail markers. I spotted a cool lizard about 20' away, but then we saw half a dozen more much closer up farther up the trail. They were doing push-ups which I was told attracts the ladies. We were passed by a few people going both ways and were taking it easy in the heat. Once at the top we were treated with a great view of the city in all directions. This truly is an urban peak and it was worth the hype. On top we ended up giving some of our water to two couples that had run out. A tiger swallow greeted us at the top just like yesterday at Zion. What a treat. The way down felt much easier and there was more shade under the big cliff. Near the bottom we decided to take the optional add on trail, Bobby's Rock Loop, just to mix things up. We didn't hike up to Bobby's Rock, but we saw the little hideout along with a big indent in the mountain up and to the left of it that looked like a good retreat on a hot day. Maybe it was because of the heat, but Katrina was hiking at a very close pace to my optimal pace on this one, which made it much more enjoyable for the both of us.

The hike may have been doable without hands, but I did use them a few times as it was just easier and quicker to get up that way.
