Ascent Trip ReportSunday afternoon hike of Iron Mountain. Drove east to Jackson after my hike of Willard. Iron Mountain Rd was very treacherous and slightly muddy in my Nissan Altima but I made it. The trailhead itself has incredible views of Washington and the entire presidential range.
The trail itself was unmaintained with gnarly tree roots, ice, snow, mud, wet rocks, etc. Don't let the 0.8 mileage fool you. It was slow going up. I also passed a couple piles of fresh bear droppings and got the distinct impression I was not alone. There were limited views on top and it began to drizzle a little so I did not continue south to the iron mine.
I didn't pass any other hikers and I hurried down to my car out of 'bear paranoia'. This is definitely a hidden gem on the 52WAV list.
