Ascent Trip ReportThe drive from Achill via Westport and Louisburgh to the road end parking at the beautiful little beach to the west of Mweelrea took well over an hour. Despite being the obvious starting point for the highest peak in the province of Connaught, it was not immediately clear how to access the hill without ignoring one of the many keep out, private signs. On the way up we picked one to ignore, on the way down we tried to go between them but without success, but at no point did we meet any farmer (or any other hiker). Hillwaking is clearly not as popular here as at home in Scotland..
The climb itself was simplicity itself. Directly up a stream coming from the col immediately to the north of the summit, then along a faint path up the summit slopes themselves.
Although we saw a few showers moving past, none actually hit us so we stayed dry for the second day in a row. Pretty good for the west coast of Ireland, but this was to change the next day on Croagh Patrick.
Descent by the route of ascent and the long drive back to Achill in time for dinner.
