Ascent Trip Report

Parked at the Pine Valley Trailhead parking lot. Reachable by any car. There is a pit toilet but no running water (drought). From the parking lot, headed back up the road for about 0.2 miles. There is a trail(head) gate on the left just about at a sharp bend in the road. Gate is visible from the road. The trail is overgrown a bit with knee high grass but otherwise fine. Occasionally you will be following an old steel pipe until you reach a trail junction. The trail junction is about a mile from the parking lot. Turn left (heading uphill) at the trail junction following an old firebreak. Most of the firebreak has loose rock so you need to watch your step even with poles. Once you reach the ridge, the firebreak continues along the ridge to the summit. There are several bumps along the ridge with enough elevation gain/loss to keep you honest. There is a steeper section that might become too difficult if the trail is muddy. Luckily it hardly ever rains here. The summit is just shy of 3 miles (from the parking area). There was a heavy duty register with two smaller registers inside. We signed one of them. We found both reference markers but didn't locate the benchmark. Reference marker 1 was in very bad shape. We came across several of the very rare Tecate Cypress; thought to be the oldest (100+ years) and highest-elevation (4000-4500 feet) existing anywhere (per San Diego Reader). We grabbed a quick snack before heading down; retracing the ascent route. Car-to-car was about 4 hours 10 minutes at a photo-taken often pace (due to the flowers).
