Ascent Trip ReportKoppen, Malcolm, Johnson combo. 10.5 hours, 16 miles, 6,000' gain (averaged among all our "devices.")
This was a very enjoyable trip. I love the open alpine and following ridges. We started & ended at Johnson Creek/Teanaway Road, just past Beverly CG (3,100’). There was parking on the right side of the road. After crossing the footbridge we went right at the “Y” going up trail #1383 to the ridge between Malcolm and Koppen (~5,400’). Koppen was an afterthought, but it was right there and I had missed it on a previous trip when I did DeRoux. We returned to the saddle and continued on to Malcom, following the ridge and a good boot path most of the way. Heading to Johnson we cut off the ridge from Malcolm a bit sooner than simply retracing too far back. You will see what I mean when you’re there. There was a good trail mostly on the ridge to intersect trail #1235. From there we just picked our way up through sparse timber and open slopes to Johnson. We descended down Johnson the way we went up and then took trail #1235 to #1383A making a nice loop. All were class 2 at best, mostly walk ups, but spread out for sure.
