Ascent Trip ReportOn NC-16, 3.2 miles S of NC-18 in Monrovian Falls or 10.3 miles N of NC-90 in Taylorsville, I turned E on Davis Rd. Call this point mile 0.0. The road immediately turns R (S) and parallels the highway. At 0.2 mile I turned L on Pores Knob Rd, which is gravel. At mile 1.8 I reached Cove Gap at junction with three choices. To the R is a steeply climbing paved private drive identified as Treadway Ridge. The other two choices are gravel roads similar to the one you are now on. Straight ahead the road descends the other side of the gap. I turned L, climbing slightly. At mile 2.1 the road wraps sharply L around a ridge at a turnoff on the L to the Falcon Ridge community. At 3.3 miles I reached a fork where Obed Heights Dr goes L. This is the turnoff to the summit of Pores Knob. An FCC sign stood at the junction, as did a rusty gate, now open, and probably difficult to close or lock. The condition of Obed Heights Rd, while still OK for my rented Ford Focus, was less than that of the main road and I was concerned about steep grades and further deterioration stopping me and forcing me to back down, and I welcomed the idea of a 630 foot Earlization, so I decided to park here and hike the rest of the way.
The road climbed gradually and then began a series of switchbacks and passed some houses. At ~2400' is a stone monument on each side of the road with a few parts of a gate operating mechanism, including a keypad where one might enter an access code, though there is no actual gate. All in all there are about 10 houses, a small farm (maybe ~10 acres), and a greenhouse. The summit towers come just before the highest ground, which is a small open grassy field with views in some directions.
Martinizing types should have no trouble driving any street legal vehicle to the summit of this one. The grade is never very steep and the condition is OK, despite the suggestion of deterioration at the turnoff. I estimate that the driving distance up this road would be ~2.0 to 2.5 miles one way. The local residents have to drive their vehicles in and out all the time. If at some point the community becomes secure, hiking will become necessary, but there would be no problem hiking through the woods.
